The Artist Triptych by Pete Schramm
This is a sequence of pictures taken at the Sedona 2012 Plein Air Art Festival. I wanted to capture the translation of a scene to the artist's interpretation.
Metadata
Taken 3PM October 20th 2012. Tamron 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3, Focal Length 76mm, 1/500 sec at f/11, Canon EOS 60D.
Critique by David Akoubian
I feel the composition of the images worked great. The introduction of the building first, then inclusion of the hand, and lastly combining all the elements into the final frame worked very well for me.
Prize
Rose Triptych by Brad Oliphant
Backstory
I loved the textures of these different colored roses. One being a pink satin texture; another a deep velvet red, and another a white cotton. But the message I was trying to convey for this triptych photograph was the process of unfolding--blooming--life. The pink satin rose is just starting to open. While the red velvet rose is unfolding. The last white cotton rose is in full bloom. It tells a personal story as well for how far I have come with my photography. Years back I felt restricted from lack of technique. I also did not have the proper equipment that I wanted to be working with. Today, after having spent years crafting my skills, I have blossom into a confident photographer.
Metadata
Nikon D300, Tamron 90mm macro lens. Red rose--f/7.1 @ 1/100 shutter. Pink rose--f/9 @ 1/60 shutter. White rose--f/5 @ 1/500 shutter. All shot on daylight balance
Critique by David Akoubian
I thought the variations of the central theme was the strength of the image. Great transition of colors as well.
Prize
Topaz Clean - Edge and Texture Control Software by Topaz Labs, choice of one Backyard Shots Guide (print version), Tamron t-shirt, eco-friendly bag and lens cloth.
Eastern Bluebird by Michael Amodeo
Backstory
I am a part time Environmental Educator at Flanders Nature Center and Land Trust in Woodbury CT. In addition to teaching I created and maintain at Blue Bird Nest Box Trail with twenty nest boxes. I monitor these nest boxes weekly documenting their life cycle which gives me the opportunity to photographic these wonderful birds. I wanted to show this breeding male and female returning to their nest box.

Canon EOS 40D, Exposure Time: 1/2000Sec, F5.6, ISO 1000, Shutter Speed 1/2000, FocalLength 300mm, WhiteBalance Auto
Critique by David Akoubian
Each frame is great as a stand alone image but the combination makes the images even stronger.
Complete set of Backyard Shots Photography Guides (print version), Tamron/Domke camera bag, Tamron T-shirt, eco-friendly bag and lens cloth.
Little White House by Steve Grundy
Backstory
This is a series of shots from the "Little White House", Franklin Delano Roosevelt's country home in Warm Springs, Georgia. The images show a front view of the home flanked by a wheelchair that was designed by the president from a kitchen chair and one of the cars that he used to drive around the Georgia country roads. It is easy to see why FDR loved this area. The country is beautiful and the setting is both simple and elegant.
Metadata
All images were taken on November 30, 2012 at the Little White House in Warm Springs, GA using a Nikon D80 and Nikkor 18-200 zoom. Each of these were shot hand-held in RAW format and merged into HDR images with Photomatix and Adobe Lightroom from 3-exposures bracked at +/- 1.7 stops.
Critique by David Akoubian
Without all three elements of the frame this would not be as strong but the central element being the house and the side elements as details within the house make this image.
Choice of three Backyard Shots Guides (printed version), Tamron T-shirt, eco-friendly bag and lens cloth.
Sunset Jump by Ashley James
Backstory
This image was shot while on vacation at the Indiana Dunes State Park, this is Lake Michigan. My son was just having fun in the shore and I just took the photos in the moment, no planning :)
Metadata
Canon T3i, Canon 24-70 L lens, iso 100, 24mm, f/4.0, 1/800 sec & custom white balance.
Critique by David Akoubian
The consistency in the element placement, horizon line, etc. make this image smooth and kept me focused as I moved over the image.
Choice of three Backyard Shots Guides (printed version), Tamron T-shirt, eco-friendly bag and lens cloth.
